Abstract

This paper investigates the constraints to access to credit by SMEs in Sokoto metropolis, the capital city of Sokoto State of Nigeria. The research uses primary data collected from 294 respondents out of a population of 1710 registered SMEs in Sokoto metropolis using availability sampling technique. Regression analysis was used to analyses the data. The result revealed that there is no significant relationship between the volume of SMEs formal credit and the age of SMEs, size of SMEs, ownership structure of SMEs, size of SMEs collateral, level of education of the entrepreneur and number of training attended by the entrepreneur. However the result shows a significant relationship between volume of SMEs credit and interest rate meaning that only interest rate constrained access to credit in the study area. The study therefore, recommend lower interest rate in the future government intervention programs for SMEs in Nigeria
